Man charged with attempted murder after shootout with deputy in Supply
SUPPLY, N.C. (WECT) - The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an officer shot a person at a home on Plantation Court near Supply at around midnight on Thursday night.
One person was taken to the hospital, but according to the BCSO, no deputies were injured in the shooting. Jan Douglas Sides, a 58-year-old from Supply, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
According to the BCSO, a deputy was investigating a shots fired complaint before the shooting. After they arrived, the BCSO says a person fired at the deputy, and the deputy returned fire, hitting the person twice.
“The responding deputy rendered aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to the hospital where he is recovering as of this afternoon. No deputy was injured during the incident. As per protocol, Sheriff Brian Chism has requested the assistance of District Attorney Jon David and the NC State Bureau of Investigation to review the use of force actions taken by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office deputy. A separate internal investigation is also being conducted by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards to ensure the policy was followed,” a BCSO announcement states.
Jon Deacon lives near the home where the shooting occurred. He told WECT that he’s used to hearing gunshots around the area, but he was shocked to hear multiple shots fired.
“It sounded like someone was just casually shooting,” Deacon said. “A little while later, I woke up to multiple gunshots back to back. It sounded like multiple guns.”
Updates will be provided as more details become available.
