NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - “Read across the County” kicked off on Thursday, June 1, with an event at the main branch of the New Hanover County Public Library.

The initiative, which seeks to use “books to bring people of different races and ages together for a community-wide summer of reading,” is running from June 1 through August 26 and offering a variety of programs and discussions tied to the selected book titles for each age group.

“This year, events include a class with the Brooklyn Arts Music Academy teaching the fundamentals of violin playing, a concert with violinist Adam Crane, an American Sign Language (ASL) Storytime with Daisy Wooten and members of the Wilmington Symphony, and much more,” states the county in on its website.

The full calendar of events can be found on the NHC Public Library website.

This year’s titles include:

  • The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb, a southeastern N.C. native (Adult selection)
  • You, Me, and Our Heartstrings by Melissa See (young adult selection)
  • A Duet for Home by Karina Yan Glaser (middle grade selection)
  • Listen by Shannon Stocker (children’s picture book)

“The summer-long program will conclude on Saturday, August 26 with a visit from Slocumb for a discussion about his work and the underlying themes. The author visit will be held at the Northeast Library (1241 Military Cutoff Road) from 2:30-4 p.m. with registration opening in July,” the county adds.
